Maybe there should be some kind of "Lock" in missions made by users, locking it with a password or something like that if the maker doesn't want it edited.
Thats what PRO format was supposed to do. Now when it's removed by numerous requests and discussions someone wants it back
Same again TDL will ask about poor mapmakers who forgot their passwords and Harold will raise to write password remover.
There's just no end in this issue

Again I see no reason in copy/pasting original KaM maps, they are property of KaM game and should stay untouched (at least in my editor). Copy/paste will work only on scratch made maps.

Thanks for D3DWindower hint, I hope to try it soon :)

Well, ok. that's true as well, so you just can leave it out.
I have quickly tried a partially translated version of it, but with me it didn't get to the menu, (it crashes after the intro movies, before the menu shows up). It is said that you may need to change the settings, so maybe it does work when other settings are used, i dunno, you should probably just try it.

It did work with another game, so the prog itself works.

EDIT:::
Also found DXWnd, in which I managed to make it run, but the colors are corrupted...

The original KaM maps should be untouched, yes (certainly not copy/paste terrain from it). But why not copy/paste terrain of your own maps?

I will show you what I mean. Look at these screens:

http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/6126/94698325ol9.png

On the first one, you see my mission 8. On the second, you see mission 9. It has to look the same, but if I want it to be like that, I'll have to do it all with Quage's editor. That's fairly annoying! :P

Scratch-made Maps: Own maps
Or is there a misunderstood?

Yea...

Editor will copy/paste only from maps made in it. Thus if you kept PRO files of your maps you can edit them with no limitations :)

P.S. Please use JPG pics, PNGs are loading too long.

Ok, that's good news. Thanks. :)

Next time I will use JPG. I could have used BMP, though!

The problem of course is that KAM itself requires the map to be unlocked, so you can not really lock it.
Which is why I raised a question about a really locked map format for TKE only. But no one is interested, and I won't bother until someone is.

As to KAM's maps being intellectual property of the makers.. do you know how old that game is?? It would be good for custom maps if you could, for example, copy original mountains into it - as they are hard to make and often fail. The owners of the intellectual property are not going to care (we would have heard of them if they did, especially I would have with my TKE), so why should we?

I would prefer custom build mountains, at least mapmaker will learn something rather than copy/pasting :P After all it's not something as complicated as launching a rocket   - few mouse clicks and moves and it's done :)

I guess since you are aware of map locking you can make decision you like and take requests and suggestions from anyone interested.
In TSK/TPR case there's noone active in charge, so I assume that by default maps should be untouched.

so, any suggestions? or aren't you interested?

ps: ok what am I complaining about, I can just make a map-part copier myself..
edit: done.
edit2: here: http://www.freewebs.com/knightsandmerchants/downloads/MapCopy.rar
(this is obviously a commandline tool, do not use if that does not sound familiar, it displays help when there are not enough arguments, and it's not completely tested)

@Harold: This is KaM Editor topic. Sorry, I must have overlooked your TKE topic here in this forum, where is it? I'd really like to contribute to it :)

Ok, once Harold made copy/paste tool from stock maps I definitely don't need one in KaM Editor
Copy/Paste is technicaly done, now I work on making it handy and user friendly :)
Concept so far:
1. click "Copy" in menu
2. left click sets left corner of copy area
3. right click sets right corner of copy area
4. open new map
5. click "Paste" in menu
6. left click pastes copied area starting from upper left corner
or right click pastes copied area starting from lower right corner
7. use Undo if something didn't fit

I agree. There should be a TKE thread on this forum.
Copy/Paste is technicaly done, now I work on making it handy and user friendly :)
Concept so far:
1. click "Copy" in menu
2. left click sets left corner of copy area
3. right click sets right corner of copy area
4. open new map
5. click "Paste" in menu
6. left click pastes copied area starting from upper left corner
or right click pastes copied area starting from lower right corner
7. use Undo if something didn't fit
I have a better idea:
1. Click Copy in menu.
2. Left click the top left corner and drag to the bottom right corner. (an outline displays what you are selecting) When your cursor reaches near the edge of the editor it auto scrolls across.
3. Open a new map (unless your pasting into the same one)
4. Click Paste. The section you copied is now displayed under you cursor, just like a really large tile. Click to paste it.
You would need to be zoomed out a long way for copying/pasting large sections.

This would be more controlled, plus more user friendly. (although it would be more work to program, so do it how you want to. The way you suggested would still work ok)
Another suggestion: A "Lock Tile" tool. You can lock and unlock tiles. Locked tiles will not be changed by the smart tiling/random tiling. This would make walls/bridges easier, as you could lock them and then place the water under the bridge, or the ground next to the wall, without the auto tiling destroying your work. Just pretend the lock tiles are the same type as the tile you are placing, then you could do the ground next to a wall. Not a very important feature though, some of the other suggested are better.
Lewin.

Copy/Paste done. It's not perfect yet, for example when pasting it previews area using underlying height map, not buffer map. I will fix that later.

Now approaching city planner function: DAT loade works fine, but I need help with it:
- where I can download recent scripting commands list with explanations? I remember RealHotdog and JbSnorro made such lists, but that was a year ago..
- can anyone tell me RGB colors for AI opponents please? And order in which they come in script codes.

P.S. Lock tile tool - I tried making one but it appeared there's no need in it. All new tiles placed manualy are "locked".

Lewin made a really good help-file with ALL Commands and colors explained
Just have a look at his editor (the ZIP file includes the help file)

Ok, I realised city planner is not one hour work
That's why I decide to release KaM Editor 0.4 without city planner, there are enough improvements in it already :)

You can download KaM Editor 0.4 from here: http://krom.rscsites.org/index.php?t=misc

Feedback is welcome
