The Dark Site, I think your idea has good reasons to be discussed, but for me it's a no.
What you are saying and my answers :
New players should learn the hard way. In (almost) any other wargame you are allowed to build almost everything right from the start.
Well this can be discussed, but I do think it's quite hard for new players already (this is only my opinion)
I like the idea but it may be a bit unfair when it comes to multiplayer. Depending on your location, and resources you may have to build to accommodate and say enemy #1 starts with loads of iron and begins weapon production early on, you may be in for a short game. Then say enemy #2 has no iron and must be reliant upon leather troops, your ally can quickly wipe him off the map even with peace time.
Games are always unequal if one player has iron while the other player doesn't. So maps should be fair.
This is my main reason to say no :
Your idea would break pretty much all of the maps that are based on the "one player has wood and leather, the other has iron", and these maps ARE interesting, they do change the way a game is played, and your idea would kill this by letting someone begin weapon production too early, not letting even a chance to the leather player(s).
It would make some maps useless, and that's not good in my opinion.
Also, it would make almost all of the non peace-time games really short, maybe too much.
If there's a little inequality on the map like an iron mine that is a bit more far for one player, he would have .. well .. like no hope.
You have good reasons to think it's a good idea, I think myself that sometimes the games look the same, but I do think that the map creators have all the tools to change the way the game is played, and they already did so with maps opposing leather and iron, and I think it's the best option.
