IRC - Internet Relay Chat

20 - 21.2.2009 (Yes, I copyed this style from Krom because I liked it so much.)
============================
Original post, the guide and EDIT notices.

3 - 5.9.2009
============================
Some small changes and fixed few typos.

EDIT: Channel has been set up again! Join to Knights_and_Merchants at QuakeNet!

You can paste the following command: /join Knights_and_Merchants

EDIT: It's recommend to read other posts in this topic for other important information.

EDIT: Feel free to send me private messages if I'm not online (I'm using bouncer which saves all private messages). I read them instantly when I get back to online.

Original post
==============
Hello everyone!

I was thinking today that is there any instant messaging (like IRC) chat about KaM. It's great that these forums exist, butI think instant messaging serves better multiplayer than forums (it's faster, for example when you need to decide who hosts the game etc.). I haven't found anything yet, so I decided to ask this from you all.

Do you know any existing IRC-channels about KaM in any IRC-networks?

I'm using QuakeNet, and I could host a channel for KaM. But first I want to know would there be any users to take to advantage of it if I made the channel?

Cast your votes.

EDIT: Moved the guide to the first post.

Quick-guide to start using IRC by Juba:

Note: My OS is Windows Xp Pro, and these instructions can be incorrect with different OS.
Read always the current step fully before doing anything. This reduces mistakes.

Step 1
First you have to download mIRC and alternatively NNS. Both can found here at NNS donwload site. NNS 4.22 is designed for mIRC 6.34
Straight link to download mIRC 6.34 (latest version is 6.35, but it's quite surely partly incompatible with NNS 4.22)
Straight link to download NNS 4.22 (latest version)

It's highly recommended to download NNS. I guess you got the point, these instructions require NNS.

Step 2
Install mIRC 6.34, follow the installer's instructions. DON'T RUN MIRC AFTER INSTALL!
Then run NNS installer. After three steps it asks where you have installed mIRC 6.34. Enter the right directory and continue. Now you'll be asked to decide which directory NNS should be installed. The default folder is Application Data which is hidden folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\NoNameScript). I recommend to change the directory e.g. C:\Program Files\NoNameScript for easier access to files if later needed (e.g. repairing NNS with nnrepair.exe). Follow the rest instructions and finish the NNS install.

Now you should have (if you chose) two new desktop icons, "mIRC" and "Launch NNS". You can delete mIRC icon because you won't need it.

Step 3
Launch NNS. First you see a pop-up telling that you have 30 days left of evalution copy. You don't have to pay for mIRC after 30 days, it just takes longer to run mIRC after 30 days (then you have to wait for about 30 secs before the continue button becomes clickable). Click continue. Now you'll be notified that you're using the script for the first time. Click ok.

After clicking ok, NNS option windows pops us and it should look like this. There's nothing important to do now.

Step 4 (optional)
If you don't like the default look, you can change the theme. I prefer Digital theme with blue scheme. Here's picture of theme setup menu.

Step 5
Close NNS options menu. (Digital theme with blue scheme looks cool, eh?)

Now open mIRC options. You can do that by clicking the button which is marked in this picture. Then you should see mIRC options (also in the picture).

Fill in all the fields (well, alternative nick is optional). E-mail can be anything you want, it doesn't have to be real. And here's an example.

Step 6
When the basic information is filled, then it's time to choose the IRC server. First, check here, which server is closest on you. For me it's meaditraffic, because it's the only server in Finland. When you get the right server address, you need to add it to mIRC server list. Check the server tab in mIRC Options. All QuakeNet servers at the list you checked are public so you don't need any password. Fill the rigth address and click add. Then select the server which you just created to the list. Another picture.

Step 7
When you click the Select button, you should see the first options tab again. Now you're ready to connect into QuakeNet! Press connect and wait for a moment. If everything is correct (your firewall might block mIRC...) you should be welcomed to QuakeNet. Like this. (I've censored my host and IP-address for security reasons.)

Step 8
The next thing is to create a Q-account. It's very, very good way to identify yourself. It's safe - just don't loose or forget your password and obviouslu don't tell it to anyone. Use the following command and Q should notify you. You need to enter your real e-mail address in this case. After Q has notified you, close mIRC. Go and check your e-mail. There's a link to obtain your password. For security reasons you must enter two words. The password site Your authname is the same nickname you had when you entered the HELLO-command. Write down your password and run NNS. Open NNS options (the NN icon next to the mIRC opitons icon) and check the following tab. Write your authname and password to following fields and check all Q-setting fields.
Click ok to close options.

Step 9
Connect to QuakeNet (to see is your auth working.) If you entered those details right, Q informs you're logged in.

Step 10
Great, you have finally made your way to this point. It's time to join to the channel. You can do with this command: /j Knights_and_Merchants *
And that's it! Now you're at the channel and ready to talk! You can see the channels welcome message sent by Q and the channel topic little bit upper.

( /j is a shortcut for command /join ) In IRC-protocol, #-character appears to every channel name.

Step 11
To make using IRC easy, fast & comfortable, I have few tips for that. You should add the channel to favourites, so mIRC joins automaticly there when you connect to any QuakeNet server. Click Favourites at menu bar, then Organize Favourites.
(I don't have picture for this because it was corrupted in my usb-memorystick. :? ) This shouldn't be difficult. Just look bottom of the pop-up tool, and check the Enable join on connect[ field. Close the tool and click again Favourites at menu bar. Choose this time add to favourites. Just make sure that you check the Join on connect field. And this is the final picture...

Congratulations, you have finished! Enjoy using mIRC. Feel free to ask anything from me here or @IRC.

There used to be an IRC channel about KaM some two to three years ago that I sometimes visited. Sadly the maintainer shut it down because he lost interest and the channel was quite inactive, though it was only promoted on the German forum anyway.
I had plans to add a Java based IRC client onto my website that would connect to some channel (as can be seen from the grayed-out "Chat" link), but I never got around doing it.
But hey, if you feel like doing an IRC channel for the game, go for it! :D I'm sure I'd visit it at least occassionally (haven't been using IRC for a number of years now, perhaps it could revoke my interest in doing that?).

I don't currently use IRC, but I used to. And if you set up a server for KaM then I would certainly use it.

Lewin.
I wasn't mean to host any kind of server, just an IRC channel to QuakeNet for a start. After all, I don't know much about computers, I'm only good at basic use. Well maybe little bit over that.
I wouldn't have skills for that yet (and it costs a lot of money to bought/rent server and maintain it). I start at upper secondary school this year autumn and there I'll be able to learn HTML and prgramming. etc. but I'll consider about hosting the server seriously after few years.

And back to that channel... ( I guess you know something about QuakeNet and the Q-bot?)
I've now created the channel to QuakeNet and inviting the Q-bot with my friends assist (you need always few idlers for that). After the Q-bot joins, I can deal ops for few trustworthy guys, like you two Lewin and Litude.

EDIT: I got the Q-bot! Now everything needed is done.

Join #Knights_and_Merchants in QuakeNet! Feel free to send me private messages if I'm not online (bouncer saves those messages). I read them instantly when I get back to online.

I only meant create a channel. Starting a server is not necessary. (sorry, I used the wrong words)

Without meaning to sound stupid, could you please explain what to do more precisely? It has been a long time since I used IRC. What is a good client? How do I join the right server/channel?

I'm sure other people won't know what to do either.
Lewin.

The most used client is mIRC and it's best for those who haven't used IRC before (or people like you Leiwn, who haven't used IRC for years). I use myself mIRC with NoNameScript (NNS) add-on. Using mIRC is easy because you can do a lot of things by mouse & menus (even more in NNS) so you don't have to remember almost any commands (and the command lists can be found by clicking mouse).

Just to inform everybody:

Unfortunately the Q-bot left the channel at summer because the channel was too inactive. So the channel actually don't exist any more.
Well, creating channel is easy, just /join Your_channel_name (max. 20 characters). (So you can still join to Knights_and_Merchants - the channel is created when you join there)

EDIT: It seems that 20 character limit isn't functional any more (well, at least it was at 2008 march when I started to use IRC). And then I realised that Knights_and_Merchants channel name has 21 characters. I wonder when this limit has been removed.

I dunno if I have told here this before that part of my main computer's hardware was broken for long time after april and after 40 inactive days the Q left.

The only activity at the channel was one conversation between me and Litude, nothing else. :(

Seven years ago I tried to establish an IRC channel on the german IRCNet but failed to attract people.

I didn't realize there was a channel otherwise I definately would have idled there.

Can we request Q again?

IRCnet =/= QuakeNet -Remember this.

If you try to join e.g. Knights_and_Merchants in IRCnet you'll probably just create a new channel (and if there was a channel named Knights_and_Merchants and users at the channel in QuakeNet, they wouldn't notice your joining - you're at different IRC-network).

I prefer QuakeNet because it's the most popular network, it has large selection of useful modes, it's easy to use and of course, all my friends and channels which I use are there.
Can we request Q again?
Of course! It takes just few hours (well, they say it takes few hours to get Q but last time it took like ~65 mins and me and my idlers were impressed :D ).
I never read this topic before.
When I created this topic, I really surprised that almost anyone read this topic (now I guess it's better, almost 350 readings but still just 8 votes?).
But I use IRC now too. I would like to join a KaM channel. If anyone starts i'll join. But I hope it gets active then.
You used my guide?
-----------------------------------------------

Ok, it seems that our channel would get at least two idlers (?) so I'll set up the channel again. If language causes problems, we can always create (sub)channels e.g. Knights_and_Merchants.en, Knights_and_Merchants.de etc.

Yes, it was down. Now it's active and I have the Q bot! Join the channel at QuakeNet!

/join Knights_and_Merchants

Btw: I don't recommend to use that poor Firefox add-on. You can't e.g. automaticly auth with it. Get a good client, mIRC is a good start. Check my guide for a quick start.

*Sigh* The channel exist no more because there wasn't any users. And I forgot to correct it here months ago - anyway, it doesn't matter. This is just a little bump.

Edit: And btw Lewin, how the hell I didn't remember you were using Linux when I answered to you/made this guide?
If you want to start using IRC, you should try Irssi or X-Chat. :P
