This is not an easy thing to do... I have set it up myself and if you both know what you are doing it makes it easier.
Here are some rough instructions. Let me know if you don't understand parts of it or need more help.
Net-Games no longer works so Local Area is your only option. This means you have to connect your computers across the internet in such a way that they think they are connected locally. Thankfully a piece of software called Hamachi comes into play here, it does exactly that. Download and install it, then create your own network or "room" with a name and password. Get your friend to join that network and you will effectively be connected locally. Make sure you can both see each other as "online" in Hamachi. After that turn off any firewall applications (including Windows Firewall) because they might block it. Then one of your create a local game and the other one join it. For the person joining, when a box appears for you to type something into, use the other persons IP address from Hamachi. (you can right click on them and click Copy IP Address or something) It will be a set of numbers separated by dots. Put that into the box then press enter. Hopefully it will find the game. If it doesn't then try getting the other person to create and the other join. You should be able to do that with more than two people as long as you are all using the same Hamachi network.
Hope this helps, let us know how it goes.
