Knights and Merchants + Vista, is there any cure?

I've tested KaM TPR on Virtualbox - it was working but graphics and sound was very slow.
I also know that free VMware server can have trouble with games - try using Player (which need 3rd party VM creator) or Workstation (not free).

i tryed all you said and it looks like i need the windows xp to install it on virtual box so is there any programs or tutorials that can tell me how to run xp on my vista without cd?? because K&M works on my computer but its not smooth and sometimes lags and its not the computer fault ty and i aprichate the help sry for bad spellling

You mean you don't know how to install XP inside VirtualBox?

Warning: before setting any memory size check how many of that do you have! Both systems must have enough resources to work properly?

Installing systems inside virtual machine is safe - it doesn't touch any of physical partitions or MBR.

1. Install it and run.
2. Click "New"
3. Click "Next"
4. Insert VM name, for example "Windows XP" and select Windows XP in operating system type. Next.
5. Memory - it depends how many RAM do you have, 256 MB for XP is recommended. Next.
6. Click "New"
7. Click Next
8. Select the first type
9. Set the image size (if you don't plan to use the VM to do anything else, 3,5 GB will be enough). Next
10. Click finish, next, finish.

Now right-click on it and go to settings:
- On CD-rom tab select "Mount host's CD-rom" and select that you will use to install
- On Sound tab enable sound and don't select NULL driver

Okay, ready. If you need help with installation, see here the official Microsoft's guide or here for my one (it describes more advanced things).

After installation, don't forget to install guest additions (from VirtualBox's menu). Remember also to disable auto mouse capturing.

No, you only need an image of the CD
For some (bad) images you need a key
should I mention you can get a copy of an XP image on mininova?

When using a cd-image, select "ISO Image File" instead of host driver. (note that the image has to be ISO, you may have to convert it if it doesn't come as ISO)

You can download free 180 days legal copy of Windows Server 2003 - very similar to XP. Look at MS website.

As a matter of fact, Microsoft offers an already set up version of Windows XP for Virtual PC here. Note that it's a 60 day trial or something, but it's extremely easy to run.

so, what about the suckers who managed to buy a laptop, with crappy Vista pre-installed, and a motherboard that doesn't have XP-compatible drivers? trust me, I've looked, there's zero XP support for the model of laptop I own >_<

and yes, XP is -way- better than Vista... seriously, why did Microsoft ever -think- Vista would be any good? it's just some friggin eye-candy -_-

anyway, back on topic... got Vista, got KAM (no expansion packs), got compatibility mode set to XP (it wouldn't even run in 98 mode), and bam, it won't work (mouse moves -way- too slow, colours are blotty and off, clicking takes ten tries). so, -is- there a solution besides dual-boot or virtual pc? dual-boot won't work, cause XP and below won't even recognize my hard-drive without a proper driver (which was never made)...

Laptops are known to be annoying..
Anyway what kind of harddrive is that? If it's just SATA/SATA2 then there are plenty of drivers for XP (just get any illegal version, it will have a SATA driver pre-installed)

Instead of Virtual PC you could use VirtualBox of VMWare or maybe something else, you may have to disable mouse integration for K&M though.

I've got a laptop too.

There are a few things you can do with the hdd(sata/sata2).

Option 1) try getting into the BIOS and setting the hdd to 'compatible' mode.

Option 2) Get a XP cd and alter the files. there should be a guide somewhere, just google for it. or dl a pre-SATA-inserted one...

Secondly, i'm trying to get it to run on vista as well. momentarily it either runs with mouse-lag

VERY bad colors but a good mouse with D3DWindower.

VMWare Works perfectly with Knights and Merchants b.t.w. Even a few newer games can be played within a VMWare Virtual machine.

I have seen KaM TPR run perfectly on 3 different vista Laptops without any tweaking or changes. (one of them was brand new from the shop) I have no idea why this is, everybody else seem to be complaining. Maybe it's only in Australia or something? Different driver sets/compatibility? Or maybe it's because we are all upside-down here...

I have never found a Vista computer that won't run KaM TPR, although I've only tried 3.

I have read, that Windows 7 an emulator for Windows 7 includes. So we can play TPR without any problems in the new Microsoft operating systems!
