Could this be used in an effective way on a multiplayer game?

i.e make 10 woodcutters and ALOT of timber and then trade for iron armour etc? Would this be useful?

I guess there's only one proof way to test that yourself in a SP game and see how many resources you will get :)

Marketplace is essential for many players. Especially trades like coal => tree trunks.

Yes, common practice allows you to use Market to trade resources for tree trunks and food to deal with shortage and hunger in short terms. Having more wood also allows you to build quicker.

Trunk trading is undesired effect, but the good point it that it makes game more dense and speedier, which is good for MP :)

Except that on some locations you have very little space/no trees (or far away) so market becomes the only viable option if you don't want to fall behind.

I can make in 60 min pt 1 farm, 1 woodcutter, 3 markets, a food production and a decent army. (30 xbow, 15 lances.)
So yes, you can do great things with the market. :D

I think trunk trading is good, like you said it's the only way to have a decent game speed. (Except on some locs where you have MANY trees and you don't have to relocate woodcutters.)
If you would like to remove it setting up a forest should be easier.
(Faster trees growing, plant only option, also planting instead of cutting everything first.)
So yes trading for trunks is cheap but when you do it for too long your mines will run out way too quickly (except on maps with 50000 coal),
know that trading something for ores is a whole other story. ;)

But your opponents will overproduce you by far in 10 minutes, even less.
Best way to use the market on maps such as golden cliffs or cursed ravine is building alot of woodcutters and while they are planting trade iron for wood (coal is scarce). I've tried going with no woodcutters and abuse coal like mad, but that isnt as very effective , it might only work on maps with ALOT of coal.
