Computer goes haywire loading up KaM

Hey all, just created this account in the hopes that someone else has experienced this problem and knows a solution. Whenever I boot up KaM my computer goes absolutely bonkers. It's like it goes into maximum overdrive, sounds like a car revving, and it's not even the sound my CPU makes at max cap, it's like 5x louder than that. Anyone know why this is? I think it's the fan for my CPU, but I'm not too certain, can't think of what else it might be. Just sucks because I recently bought KaM on steam for a measly dollar or so, but I haven't played it in years and this game was a defining part of my childhood. I can't wait to get back into the comfortable womb of beautifully detailed (for its time) landscapes and build my little town and conquer my neighbours.

Anyway, I don't see how it could be such a hardware demanding game so what do you guys think? My CPU's a dual core AMD, 2.8ghz IIRC. 8GB RAM, 2GB VRAM. I'd like to think my PC's more than capable of running this game right? Any help will be much appreciated :?

Your PC looks more than capable.

Did you try original KaM or KaM Remake?

What does "goes absolutely bonkers" mean? Does your computer just sound like it's an airplane taking off, or are your CPU and/or RAM levels skyrocketing?

Original KaM I'm pretty sure, I booted up the "HD" version that came with the steam purchase, and that seems to be working fine although it only has the campaign and the gamespeed seems to be running faster.

More like a car engine lol. I've attached a pic of the cpu usage while I was running the game. I also noticed that the "overdrive" only started up while on the main menu screen, and in-game. Inbetween loading, it stopped. Strange.

Can you also post a screenshot of the Processes tab sorted by CPU load (high to low) when KaM is running?

As you can see it's not using that much memory. I've set the priority to realtime and affinity is both cores at default but I even tried singling out the cores. Dunno what the problem is for the life of me, but then again I'm quite a beginner with computing. Anyway, thanks for the replies guys. I think I'm doomed :'(

Never set the priority of any non-system process to Realtime. Ever.

Also:

Oh snap, rookie mistake. Thanks for the heads up. Also here's updated from load order

Wow 50% CPU makes me think your CPU is really old. Do you have any more information about your CPU? Name + type or anything?

Also: try closing Google Chrome when playing KaM.

Yeah, it is pretty old I think. Had it for about 4 years, maybe more. It's the AMD Athlon II X2 220, attached the full details if you wanted to know more, it's all greek to me unfortunately. Been planning on getting a new CPU anyway so this might be the nail on the coffin. Also I'll give KaM remake a try, see if it's the same with that. I vaguely remember the remake from the last time I played KaM but I think I only used the map editor, which is a pretty damn cool thing to have made anyway. It's great to see a community still alive and active for a relatively unknown (in my parts) game from over a decade ago. It truly is a great game though, haven't found anything like it since. (except for the settlers so I've heard, but I never played them) anyway I'm going off on a tangent now.

Looks like a bug of some kind in KaM TPR.
May I remind you, that original game was out almost 15 years ago and worked on 15yo PCs.

I agree with the latter, but KaM HD =/= original KaM.

This is quite right. Though topic-started specifically asks about KaM TPR which I presume is "original".

My guess is the original game has no FPS cap in the main menu, so it renders as fast as it can, making your CPU go to maximum frequency and maxing out a single core of your machine. When the game was originally written this wouldn't have mattered since CPUs were pretty slow and most games would have maxed out the CPU anyway.

KaM Remake has an FPS cap so it shouldn't make so much noise.

I'm assuming that must've been the problem. Installed KaM Remake and it's fixed! Now I can safely play without fear of my computer exploding. Not to mention the myriad of features you guys have added to the base game. Really solid work Krom and Lewin, I'll be sure to make a donation. I know it's a labour of love but I'd pay full price for this over any AAA title nowadays. Oh and thank you Anti Viruz for troubleshooting and putting up with my noobness :$
