That's because of the global warming, I'm afraid

Please note that's a screenshot from the original game not KaM. AFAIK that's because of lighting and the fact that original KaM uses a 256 colour palette. So with only 256 colours you can't have smooth lighting like we have in the Remake (with 16 million colours). There are only a certain number of blues available with 256 colours. You'll also see dark patches on other terrain, and darkened/lightened areas will not look as smooth as in the Remake.

Do you also do such a thing in the remake?

We also do lighting like that, but it looks smoother than KaM because we have a bigger range of colours available. So it probably isn't as noticeable.

To be honest I think it's nothing short of incredible that they made KaM look so beautiful using only 256 colours. It must have taken some clever art decisions to make the colours be so restricted and yet look so vibrant and vivid. For back in 1998 it was a really good looking game. The fact that we still play it 14 years later with very few graphical improvements really says something (terrain shading and sprite shadows/transparency are basically the only graphical improvements we've made)

Yeah, I know. I was just joking.

I like those spots on ice. It looks like more "fragile" ice ground, while you have thick ground...
I wonder how would "terrain <> penalty" formula apply to this game.
All foot units have 24 mov speed, while horses 39 (I checked with Unit Editor).
What if Desert and Ice slow down movement of troops by %25? (18 mov foot, 30 mov horse/charge)
This feature would add some tactical planning for ranged units and cavalry maneuvers if you get my point.
Not a priority indeed, but still some decent idea for improving the game.

I think that it would just be annoying. Path finding would be strange and many maps would have to be adjusted. Personally, I would just like to be able to make a map with snow or ice without worrying how terrain might effect the movement of soldiers.
