this topic was created so that i could get it to work in windows 7. suggesting the remake is then off topic plus that this isnt the remake forum. please help me get the original game working in windows 7. please dont ban me.

If you were paying attention you'd have seen that we both don't know what the problem is, seeing as the Vista/7 fix normally always worked. That's why Lewin came up with the Remake as an alternative.

And besides, KaM.net does provide the official support for KaM Remake (just not this forum section).

TSK had loading in multiplayer, but it never worked when I tried it a few times, the file refused to load.
TPR has no loading in multiplayer as far as I know, and it goes out of sync most of the time.

I can't help you any further with getting it working on your Windows 7 computer, from what you've said it should work. My only guess is that something about the version you have is different to most people's game, so getting a different copy of it might help, such as the one from GOG.com. I don't have any more advise for you unless you have some further clue as to why it might not be working on your computer.

Sorry, where did I go off topic? The Remake is very much related to this topic, it is a viable alternative to the original game and for most people it is the preferred way to play KaM multiplayer. And in my post I also tried to help you get TPR working. I don't see where the topic derailed at all. I tried to help you with your original problem, and suggested an alternative to your problem in case you weren't aware of the capabilities/features of the Remake.

I doubt it will help as usually the Windows Vista/7 fix is all that's required.

Well, given the little facts that were provided I'd guess that this is a video card driver issue.
The original game was something like DirectX5 or 6, TPR was similar.

The point is, that the old version prior to DX10 are NOT COMPLETELY included in Win Vista and above. You see that on the fact that you need to install DX9 on a machine to run for example CnC3.

The point why it works on one machine and does not on the other is then, that one driver is written in a good way, meaning that it directs the old functions to the new API while the other is not. I suspect the unsupported resolution of your new computer as the point where the problems occur.

So I suggest: try install DX9 and see if it works.
If it does not, try to install the most recent video driver.
If it still does not run, try to set your desktop resolution to 1024x768 and then start the game.

If it still does not run you can at least say that you tried your best

Btw: it would really help if you gave a little bit more information about your system, what machine, what cpu+gpu manufacturers etc.

The AVI fix might not be compatible with Windows 7 or 64 bit Windows at all. It was made around the Windows 2000/XP era. By the way, deleting/renaming the movies from the game will probably have the same effect because it probably won't crash if it doesn't try to play them. The game will just skip the movies if the files don't exist.

I would try Siegfried's advice, some of the required DirectX files could be missing. Try installing DirectX 9c and see if that sorts it out. I've had to do this to get other old games working on some new computers I think.
