Why not taking really maps that are designed for 1vs1 (example: tdls desert map) or maps that are really balanced/mirrored.... you can forget your dreams that on maps like golden cliffs noone will say that he only lost becaus of unfairness, like abusing of recourses/campy locs/more place...

I think there are nice balanced maps... but never considered/played.

I am not sure but on Russian Forum there is no information about picking loc for opponent. It is more like both players can decide on what loc they gonna play.

But seriously it might work for a 1v1 (it is intended to have all locations different, but equal) but it is still in early testing. There have been only two (actual) games played on it as far as I know.
