I've taken the time the last few days to play some fan-created maps. A lot of them have been great fun to play, but here and there I could think of ways to improve the maps.
Perhaps if there is a seperate stickied topic in the Map Design forum called "Fan-Made Map Discussion", people can test new maps out, and post what they thought about it and perhaps how to improve it.
Just an example:
Last week I played a very entertaining map called "Smart". In the description it was called a rather difficult mission.
When the game started, I immediately used my light cavalry to scout the entire map out. I quickly noticed the enemy would gather his new military units to the area between your ally's bridge and your enemy's camp entrance. The units were very vulnerable there.
Without much effort, I could pick off any crossbowman the AI player sent out, preventing him to fully build up his force. I expected an attack from the enemy around the 1 hour mark, but what happened instead was that my ally attacked him.
Throughout the entire mission, the enemy could not launch an attack on my ally or myself.
But when I read the description, it seems like it's supposed to be rather difficult to keep your ally alive. That was not the case, I could win the map with ease. Probably for a large part because of his vulnerable army gathering area.
The idea of the map is awesome, I had never played a game against an enemy that makes fresh troops so fast, so it's a map with great potential, but if the enemy's new armies are a bit better protected it could be even better.
So basically what I'm suggesting is a seperate forum topic where we can discuss custom made maps, give the creators some feedback (constructive!!) and help them to make even better maps!
