Okay I looked at your map and I'll discuss some things I've come across. Lets start with your coal fields.

Image

I think you should try to make them more like the picture on the right. You'll have to place almost every tile yourself though.

Image

The grass type you used can indeed be used to make a hill, but your's is too broad and not sharp enough. Mine isn't that great too. These hills often don't look good when they are pointing to the north. I noticed you deleted the hill but I already made the picture so I thought I'd explain it anyway.

Image

You changed this already so I won't discuss it any further.

Image

Notice the water above the bridge isn't flowing in one direction. And try to make your bridge more 'bridge-like'. :P

Also I think the whole map could be elevated much more. Not just the mountains, the other terrain as well. As for the mountains, they look like you elevated them to the max and then put some holes in it. I think you can do better!

I'd suggest you take a look at original maps too. You can learn alot from that.
I hope this helped you a bit... And it is not meant as criticism but I'm sure you know that. :)

Looks very nice. Especially the elevation of non-mountain parts.

Some ideas:
1. Player 4 has too much trees. Either remove them or give other players more trees.
2. Player 2 will find it difficult to defend.
3. I think Player 2 will be able to fire at player 4's gold mines.(Which he shouldn't.)
4. I'd say more trees. Just everywhere.
5. I'd suggest switching the Stone and Iron for player 2 and make him start lower.(This will also help him on defense since he is closer to the bridge.)
(6. Near player 4: Tile where grass/river changes to dirt/river. Those places always look ugly, try putting a rock on it or a tree in front of it to hide it.)

Player 4 only seems to have two narrow entrances to defend, which are very close to each other, whilst everyone else has to defend 3 points which are far apart. I'm not sure having the coal and gold industries there is enough of a counter balance.

Lewin wanted to include this map in the next release of the Remake, so I tried following The Dark Lord's advice:

See here

- I tried fixing the bridge. It took me a very long time, but this was the best I could get it.

- Tried fixing the coal fields (make them look nicer)

- Fixed the water (now flowing in the same direction)

- Fixed some of the elevation

The things mentioned above that haven't been 'fixed' are not fixed because this is how I intended the map to be.

Tell me what you think (especially Ben and The Dark Lord).

- Tom

The coal and bridge look great now :) The shadow under the bridge looks strange in the screenshot but I think that's just because of the scaling when you zoomed out. (scaling in the editor/Remake looks a bit odd because it happens real time)

I disagree with Yeti, I think player 4's position has a massive disadvantage because he can't build a safe gold mine. Any gold mine he builds can be shot from the other side of the mountain. Given that gold is so important and needed early on, I think that's definitely enough of a disadvantage to make up for his position having only two entrances. Same with coal: He might have a lot of iron, but it will be useless without a lot of coal mines, which will be in a very vulnerable position.

So I think the layout is all done. You could spend more time polishing it if you have time, but it's certainly good enough to include as it is.
Things that could be polished:
- More map objects (not trees, other things that have no impact on the game and are just for visual effect like mushrooms, stumps, bushes, dead trees, etc.) Try to place these in a "planned" way not just randomly: Put 3-5 mushrooms near each other, put flowers near each other, etc.
- Improve the grass by using specific tiles in an area: This is something that few map makers do, and only The Dark Lord has really perfected it. There are many different grass tiles which Krom's editor will place randomly. Some of 4 little orange flowers, some have cracks, some have rocks. If you look at each one you can find a purpose for it: The rocks should be placed near stone and gold mountains (you can observe this in KaM) and the orange flowers should go near the flower objects. You can have large areas of cracked tiles (the battle tutorial is a classic example of this, in the south there is a large area of cracked grass tiles) and this just makes the grass areas look more interesting. So have a look at the different types of grasses available on the tiles tab, you'll find that really adds to the map. Obviously don't over do it, you don't want every tile of grass near a mountain to be rocks :P

But as I said, I'll include it anyway, just have a go at those things if you have the time :)
Lewin.
