I usually use the hiding function in forums. Why? Because I want to not be seen online.

There were a number of points given that speak for the hiding. It's OK that you don't agree with that. But: the hiding does no harm and does not hurt you. So why don't you just turn it on. It's already inside the phpBB software, so it's only one checkbox that you have to enable.

Siegfried probably means that there are 2 ways to login: one on the top (click on "Login" - there there's a checkbox for hiding yourself), one on the bottom of the main forum page ("quick login" - no checkbox here)

Oh, that has never been an option in phpBB. If you want to hide your status, use the login page.
