you can make a steam group about pretty much anything, you do not need to have the game on steam, it is just to make a group for kam remake.
Does every KaM Remake player has Steam? Clearly a NO! Although I like the idea, but you will need to get every player to get steam, therefore i don't think this will be able to work...

That's not the problem. If it were possible, I'm sure Krom and Lewin'd do it right away. The problem is, how do you do it? I think Steam would first have to add your game to their system. This guy proposed a Steam group, but that obviously doesn't make accounts with passwords.

I for myself, don't like Steam that much. Thats part of the reason I don't know much about how it works. And that is why
dicsoupcan help on investigating possibilities and discussion of em is helpful and good for the project

Never mind. Apparently there's a thing called "Steam Greenlight", where the community could vote if games should appear in Steam or not. If we as a community would all support it, we could easily get it in, no problem. The problem is, would they use the installer which doesn't allow you to install it without TPR? If not, we should first have green light (hehe, that's a pun) from Joymania for the Remake, before we send this to Steam. Otherwise we could get ourselves some serious trouble with copyright, etc. I think one of us should take time to consult with some people who work at Valve. I'd be willing to do it, but I don't know if I know enough about Steam or the Remake at all to be useful.
Second issue: How do updates work? Can a developer just send their update to Steam if it's added, and it will auto-update? That would be awesome. Or would we have to send an entire new version of the game to Greenlight, getting it through again, and removing the old version? Would updating be possible at all? This too, should be consulted with Valve.

First part seems indeed interesting, but the legal issues are seemingly impossible to resolve. KaM Remake is only a mod, it's not a game by itself. If we take TPR out of the equation we will be left with black screen, no sound, no music, no anything.. Pursuing Zuxxez/Joymania into cooperation sounds complicated. We already had some ideas, like starting a campaign on collecting funds to buyout all KaM assets, or asking to release KaM open-source. You may heard of that last campaign - IIRC we had like 400-500 signatures under that petition and no reply.
For the second part - I don't know. It hardly means anything without resolving issue #1.

Well if we talk about greenlight you will need to convince joymania/zuxxez to get the game on steam as stated in this FAQ
http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/abou ... aq#general, but as far as i can make up from krom's comment that would be complicated. It could still be an option to consider though if other alternatives failed, wich hopefully they don't. I am no expert in legal issues, so i can't comment on that.
As far as it would go for the remake IF it would have worked. Since the remake is a mod valve would not make it available on steam (like in the steam store). it is possible to get the remake installed on steam, but since this is 3rd party content valve will not take responsibillity for any damage caused (well the remake causes no damage but i just wanted to state it). I do renember a mod called natural selection, it was nowhere mentioned on steam, but when you installed it it was added to your games library.
Second issue: How do updates work? Can a developer just send their update to Steam if it's added, and it will auto-update? That would be awesome. I am not sure how they do this, but i think that for official released games you can just send the update and steam will automatically update your game. Mods and such still needs manual updating. (i can confirm this one)
Also @Krom, how much would all the kam assets be worth nowadays? is it even possible to raise that much money?

@dicsoupcan: That can only be answered by A. copyright owners, then can name any sum, 1mln$, B. someone who can draw/record/write everything from scratch.

Since the remake is a mod valve would not make it available on steam (like in the steam store).
There are mods on the steam store afaik
I thought mods would update automatically too

The only way in finding out how much it would cost is by contacting the board of directors, because they need to decide wether to sell it or not. but i was just curious if someone investigated this already.

I haven't seen any mod on the steam store, it could be that the makers made some special arrangement with valve, i have no idea. But all mods i install on steam must be manually updated.

Though I'm not sure if there are many of these, and it's mostly a new game using the source engine.

i see yes, then they have changed that over the time, i guess they promote it since you need a source game to run it, wich means they make money off it.

Aha :p
The best way to know would be to ask valve, but I don't think it's a posible way for the remake right now.

Will we ever see those poor laborers (who are working on a road) die after not receiving a stone after 10 hours? It is rather depressing seeing the guy suffer for so long. His spirit needs rest

Don't worry bout their spirits, they die just like as normal citizens when their condition reaches zero (usual 30-45min) and go to pixel heaven
