Suggestion Box

Hi all :)

I've been thinking a bit about our blog mod that's been installed for a while now. It was initially installed for Pizzaisgood and EDMatt, but they n ever used it. There have been some attempts by some users, but right now it looks like the blog functionality will disappear in the near future.

However, I've also been thinking about other additions or alterations to keep our community growing (along with KaM Remake). Since this is quite hard to do on my own, especially without feedback, I thought I would be a great idea if I made a suggestion box on the forum where people can post ideas regarding the website, forum or entire community.

So, if you have any ideas that you'd like to see here or see what other people think of your idea, please post it here and I'll always comment on it. If your idea is worth discussing, we'll discuss it with the team :)

Ready, set... GO! :D

Re: Suggestion Box

Ideas for site:
- create KaM / KaM Remake wiki
- create addon maps storage with catalogue and other perks
- update the site info, it's much outdated (tbh I haven't used the kam.net site in ages because of that)
- tutorials section (how to start KaM MP, tips n tricks, etc)

Those are great ideas, but we need people that would be willing to fill the wiki with content, update the website (krisdw offered to, but I haven't heard from him since I last contacted him).

Could you elaborate on the add-on maps storage with catalogue and other perks?

The blogs were actually meant for things like tutorials (Pizza and Matt wanted to write them, but they never did). But we can also make a forum for that.

Re: Suggestion Box

Of course, everything needs to be looked after and maintained.

Maps:

I think that atm KaM community lacks map storage. A place where mapmakers would upload there maps and players would know that if they start MP and miss some map they can get it there. Kind of a centralized storage. Atm Lewin does this work in KMR repository, manually accepting maps and including them into KMR releases, but that is quite cumbersome and most mapmakers need to wait ~6 months to publish their maps. If map is not in KMR i is practically non-existent.

I envision it as a sort of catalog with filters by author, name, size, rating, KaM version, DLs, etc. where each map has a description and screenshots, comments. Much alike Lewins site actually, but all automated to certain extent. I remember Lewin said it took him ~20min to add a single map to his site. Maybe there's a way to code it more efficiently. In the end KMR would ship with 10-20 maps and most of the maps should be downloadable from the proposed storage (kam.net/maps), maybe cumulative packs as well (1 package with all the maps)

Wiki:
I think the site could benefit from using some freeware wiki engine, but I'm not sure it will get enough momentum to become usable.

Site:
Overall needs more maintenance, more news, more updates. You know what I mean, it's basically stuck in 2010 and everything that is happening happens on forum.

Re: Suggestion Box

If you do a map repository, you could integrate it within the game, so you have a function to download in there. That would be very welcome.

But a map repository is a lot of work.

Re: Suggestion Box

Like I said, for website maintenance and wiki filling we need more people. With the current crew it's just impossible, but it's definitely a good idea.

The Map Database is something I can work with. I'll see if I can figure something out :)

Re: Suggestion Box

I came from racing games modding and there addon cars was just as important for MP as addon maps in KaM. The great thing about centralized mods repo (games.reveur.de whose kind owner hosts krom.reveur.de btw) that wherever you join a lobby and dont have some car you know the exact one place where to get it in a handy manner. There's more than 1000 cars there now )

It was not like that for always though, there were other sites and repo was spread across them and was indeed troublesome. I find it a great deed that they were all replaced by this one stable repo.

Re: Suggestion Box

I would love to see a repository/database for maps, campaigns, and maybe replays :)

Kind of like my old map site but automated, so users make accounts and upload their map, then they can edit the description, add screenshots, update the download file, and leave comments/ratings on other users' maps. That's all a fair bit of work if written from scratch, but maybe there's some system out there which already does something similar to that?

Re: Suggestion Box

About the wiki, I think that's a really good idea. Just begin slow, start with English or Polish and expand slowly while there is content

Re: Suggestion Box

I like the idea of a wiki and a map repository, these would help the community by making people participate more and create more activity.
A replay repository would be nice too, with categories by version and such.

Re: Suggestion Box

I think it'll be more like a general repository, so we can expand it with files if we want to (like replays).

I'm less interested in a wiki, since it's kind of the same functionality like the blogs we have right now. Nobody uses those, so why would people use a Wiki?

I still have the Google Docs document sitting there waiting to continue but, haven't been able to get myself around to it the past months. Blame it on The Last of Us and later on, the Playstation Plus subscription I got me into. I have like 15 excellent PS3 games waiting to be played and I feel obliged to turn on the PS3 everyday instead of the PC because of that :P
