New 8P multiplayer map

Hello Kam fans,

Since there was a demand for 8 player maps I decided to make one myself. Because of the starting locations this map is also excellent suitable for 3 vs 3 or 2 vs 2 (which I normaly play) games. I hope it's still in time for the next release of the KaM Remake...

Re: New 8P multiplayer map

Not too bad for a first map.
You need to improve the terrain quality:
- More objects
- Water should all flow in the same direction (use Magic Water under tiles on Krom's map editor and show flow direction from the menu)
- Smoother coal like this: http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/6595/coal1.png
- Use special tiles a bit more, like tiles with rocks on dirt, rocks on sand, 4 little orange flowers, cracked grass, etc.

Look at original KaM maps and take note of the way objects are placed, the way coal looks, the way elevation is done, etc.
Cheers,
Lewin.

What Lewin said.
Also, maybe a bit more height difference with the mountains to the top right.

Thanks for the advice, I forgot about the water flowing. So I'll take another look and see what I can do.

Re: New 8P multiplayer map

Ok, I've finished the map. Maybe it's interesting for some other map builders how I worked on it, in order:

- First worked on the placement of 8 players in a way there isn't only the possibility for a 4 vs 4 but also for a 3 vs 3 match.
- Then added the rough terrain for the map.
- Worked on where I wanted mountains (my plan was to keep it open so players can't digg in with towers that easely or at least spend some of their precious peacetime doing so).
- Placed stone on the map.
- Located where I wanted the coal for each player (atleast 2 fields per player).
- Made more detail in the terrain (used the smallest brush).
- Left enough space for each player to build for instance multiple farms nearby.
- Didn't want to have all resources in one place and not too close to the starting location.
- Filled in the iron/gold for the mountains (not always the whole mountain but only where you can actually mine for it).
- Added water (and some marshland) on the map to separate some players and for the use of fish.
- Added different trees (not too much near the storehouse but enough to start with) and rocks, bushes etc.
- Tried to make all starting locations different (without having major disadvantages for other players) in terrain and resources (some have gold close but iron further away etc.)
- Checked for sharp tiles and corrected them.
- Spent alot of time working on heights on the whole of the map. (using passabilty 3 because I don't wanted red crosses ingame, especially not around the starting location or on coal which I think is annoying).
- Spend much time on how I wanted the mountains to look like.
- Then spend lots of time figuring out how the early script editor from Lewin worked (because of the 8 player restriction of the later versions) and wrote the script where I added wares, serfs, buiders etc.
- For versatile opening build orders I scripted the prebuild of the stonemason and woodcutter building.
- Added some more sight (16 > 25) around the storehouse so players won't have to scout with builders early on.
- Checked and fixed sharp edged coal-tiles, fixed water flow and added more fish.
- The discription in the lobby shows not only sugested teams but also shows a simple but usefull overview of where the players start.
- Tested several times on all locations.

I used the following editors:
Kroms editor 0.6d for almost all terrain.
Remake editor for all the heights.
Lewins editor 0.3 and 0.9 for all scripting.
Buildtime: about 28 hours total.

Re: New 8P multiplayer map

The map has improved a lot since I last looked :)
I'll include it in the next release if you like.

Could you write a little "story" description like we have for other maps now? (for example, Warfare in the Wilderness is: "Fight your way through these untamed and uninhabited lands where even courageous adventurers have not yet been.") Doesn't matter if your English isn't great, I'll fix it up. Even if it's just the idea I can write it into a description. Now that we have the minimap preview there's no need to suggest teams, unless it's not obvious from looking at the locations on the map. Also we need your name in the description so we can say "Made by X" (Incomudro?)

Great map To,
you know I think it's true.
Maybe you could just correct some minor defaults like the iron mine on loc 3?
Kick fast, think Bo.

Thanks Bo, I've already corrected that in the final version and some other things like a little mountain of gold extra for players 1 and 8. Made the marchlands smaller to get it more open and gave player 8 some extra stone, and more. But I've agreed to sent Lewin the final version in a pm, so we dont have different versions floating around.

Re: New 8P multiplayer map

Ok, for those of you who are interested here are some more screenshots. Added alot more detail in the last version (downloadlink is in my previous post).

Player 8 now has some more stone:
Image

Player 2 (unchanged):
Image

Player 7 now has enough starting trees:
Image

Player 4 now has a little heap of iron nearby (only 1 mine possible):
Image

The marshlands are now smaller so player 1 has to build some towers to defend himself. Also you see an extra little goldmountain for player 1 and beneath it one for player 8 just for incase it becomes a long game. (both only 1 mine possible):

Player 1 (unchanged, only has the little goldmine extra from the previous screen):

Re: New 8P multiplayer map

Hi,

I've changed the map to fit in the upcoming release. I've also rebalanced it again.

General fixes:
- Made terrain flat enough to build on.
- Some tiles were too steep for troops to stand on (between loc 6/5 and 4).
- Amount of starting food is changed:
30 sausages (was 20).
40 loaves (was 30).
50 fish (was 40).
60 wine (was 50).
I've added 10 extra goldchests to every player (was 50, it's now 60).

Specific changes:

Loc 1:
Image
More coal for this location.
No one can sneak into the base anymore just above the lake.

Loc 2:
Image
Some extra trees to the south.

Loc 3:
Image
The 2 iron mountains in the north are restored to hold the maximum amount of iron.
More coal.
Made tiles above lake more flat so you can build there.

Loc 4:
Image
Extended the ironmountain further to the north so it's a little less hard to defend yourself.
Made some tiles more flat so you can build there.

Loc 5:
Image
Access to one early goldmine below the stone.
More coal.
Some more trees.

Loc 6:
Image
More coal.
The ironmountain to the west was originaly created for this player but I've never seen someone build ironmines there (too far to build all that way). So I've created easier access to reach the mountain from the east. Maybe the 2 spots there could be shared between loc 6 and 7 but on the other hand loc 7 has already 4 spots.

Loc 7:
Image
Only made some tiles more flat.

Loc 8:
Image
An extra ironmine possible.
A few more trees.
More buildingspace towards the east.
made some tiles less steep.

Re: New 8P multiplayer map

I think you should increase amount of stone on loc 1,2,6 and 8. I seen often loc 2 or 6 no stone after 70-80 min. Loc 1 and 8 also have low. i Think minimum 1100 each loc should be good change.

Yes I thought of that. Sometimes people complain that they have no stone left, but when I watched back the replay they all still had some left. Of all the games I played here I never saw anyone out of stone completely. So I've decided to leave it this way, atleast for now.
