Re: Discussion Dutch Translation

...there should be written "SLOPEN", just like in the game:)
THANK YOU
At least one person understands hehe (not te be rude to the others though).

In the meantime I asked a few other persons (also Dutch speaking) this:
"What word would you use or what word do you think is best used if you are talking about taking down a building?"
All of them responded "Slopen" and one person even said that "Slopen" is the only word that really emphasises the taking down of buildings.

Re: Discussion Dutch Translation

'Afbreken' doesn't fit with 'annuleren', because they can mean the same.
I don't think they can mean the same thing. I challenge you to make one sentence in which either word can be used without making it weird.
There are good lingual reasons for not saying 'de afbreekauto gaat naar de vernietiging' or 'het vernietigingsbedrijf 'Van Vliet & Zn. Vernieting B.V.' kreeg de opdracht tot vernietiging van het vervallen stationsgebouw toegewezen.' 'Bij bedrijf X, gespecialiseerd in afbraakwaar, tikte The Dark Lord voor een zacht prijsje een vernietigingsauto op de kop voor onderdelen'. This sounds like bullshit, there should be written "SLOPEN", just like in the game:)
Of course it sounds like bullshit. Some words will always sound strange in cases like these because there is just only one possibility. That does not mean that we should choose 'slopen', as we can now choose from different possibilities.

I don't find this convincing at all to be honest. And the one person who said that 'slopen' is the only word is just wrong. Of course, 'slopen' is the first word people think of because it's informal...

Re: Discussion Dutch Translation

Big commotion about a small word. If u translate the word used in the English Remake, destroyed, you will get "vernietigen".

Op het laatste moment brak de gezagvoerder de landing af. Op het laatste moment annuleerde de gezagvoerder de landing.

Re: Discussion Dutch Translation

On synoniemen.net 'annuleren' isn't considered a synonym for 'afbreken', but 'stopzetten',' beëindigen', and 'staken' are synonymous for 'afbreken'. I guess the difference is that 'annuleren' is more like canceling an action before you started it, while with 'stopzetten', 'beëindigen' and 'staken' you had already started but stopped at a certain moment.
Afbreken — omhalen — omverhalen — omverwerpen — slechten — sloopen. Re: Discussion Dutch Translation

I guess we should let it stay 'vernietigen', because most people can live with that. :)

Re: Discussion Dutch Translation

'Vernietigen' can also be similar to 'annuleren'. 'Toen de fraude aan het licht kwam, vernietigde hij de overeenkomst' 'Toen de fraude aan het licht kwam, annuleerde hij de overeenkomst.'

'Vernietigen' does not talk about buildings only, but about anything that can be destroyed or canceled. 'Slopen' however, only talks about buildings and other (mostly big) objects only. If we talk about demolishing buildings, also in formal language, we will always say 'slopen', not 'vernietigen'.

Re: Discussion Dutch Translation

Beerzoeper, unfortunately they just don't want to understand :)

I don't see it change to "Slopen" anytime soon (even though it is the most correct) because the majority chooses to go with "Afbreken".

Ask any Dutch language expert and they will say we're absolutely 100% correct ;)
Oh well, then it just stays the way it is I guess (even though it's not 100% correct according to Dutch language)...

I don't like your tone. You present yourself as some sort of specialist and you say only your opinion is correct. I am willing to give in, but only if you persuade me. Come with proof, not with opinions.
ALL words we mentioned are 100% correct (slopen, afbreken, vernietigen), we were just discussing which would fit best.

Re: Discussion Dutch Translation

I have to say, that if we look to what exactly happens in the game, looks like 'vernietiging' more then 'sloop'. But however, the way of demolishing buildings in the game, is not very realistic. The building just disappear. 'Slopen' is more realistic then 'vernietigen', that last word sounds like fire a rocket on the building, or using explosives, while 'Slopen' is more the real way how a building will be demolished: With big force, but in a controlled way.

The translation of 'Slopen' is 'To Demolish', which i think is also the best word that should be used in the English version, better then ' To Destroy'

My ranks are:

#1 SLOPEN
#2 vernietigen
#3 afbreken.

This discussion has no further use. This topic will be locked, since Lewin already has translations that are good (enough).
