[IMPORTANT] SECURITY BREACH - CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD

Dear users,

Please take note that this is not an April's Fools joke!

I very much regret to inform you that our forum database has been compromised, because of sheer negligence on my end.

Other people than the ones responsible for running this forum have gotten their hands on our database password and forum back-ups (including database back-ups). These people have been identified and I know exactly who they are, but it is still unclear if they have distributed the information they have acquired.
Even though I'm hoping I can trust that these persons will not (mis)use the acquired data, we have to assume the worst. That's why all the original data they have gotten their hands on has been destroyed, including a known copy. At this moment, it is unclear how many copies have been made.
The few passwords they have acquired have been changed and thus no longer work, but is definitely possible they still have the database back-up.

We realise this news hurts the trust of our members in specifically me, but right now it's important to be transparant about the issue. That's why I call upon all members to change their passwords! Even though the passwords are encrypted, it isn't too hard to decypher them.

Right now we're still finding out if the acquired has been used by the 'attackers'. I will keep everyone informed about the issue.

When this has all been sorted out my position on KaM.net will be reviewed.

My sincerest apologies,

Tom

Thank you for coming straight out and letting us know. I know far too many people who otherwise wouldn't. :p

What do you mean your position will be reviewed? I mean i understand the gravity of the situation but even now i trust that you will run kam.net well enough and probably will not let such a thing happen again. Anyhow i will change my pw, thanks for being honest.

My position will be reviewed because I'm the one responisble for the leak. Without getting too much into details, some people had access to my personal files and acquired database passwords and a full forum back-up.

I don't really see why his position should be reviewed?
Tom did always a good job and is very dedicated.
Things like this happens sometimes and I don't think Tom had a part in it to cause it.
And who else is going to run it ?

Well I didn't directly cause it, but this wouldn't have happened if I had paid better attention to my data, so I'm definitely to blame here.

And besides that I don't think "who else is going to run it" is a valid argument when reviewing someone's position because of a security failure.

I've not been in this forum for a long time, but from what I've seen up until now I agree.

Thus, now you're going to pay better attention to your data.

This is enough in my opinion... just in case my opinion somehow matters here.

Please take not that this is not an April's Fools joke!
Typo on "note"->"not" ? Or we should really not take that this is not a joke ?

It's not a joke, just a minor typo. I'd fix it for him, but, meh, I prefer life :D

If you don't mind me asking, when exactly did the breach occur? Because I had actually changed my password yesterday night because I had a little security trouble of my own and wanted to ensure my account couldn't be accessed. Thank you for the heads up!

Before that, so you don't have to change your password again.

Fixed.

Update:
Research has shown that no one has tried to use the passwords to visit the live database and the people who stole the data no longer possess it. As stated before, the stolen passwords are no longer live so if they'd have a good memory, that wouldn't help them.

That ends the matter.
