Did crossbowmen actually wear iron plated armor during the time of war?

We all have seen that in movies and games but in reality I don't think it makes much sense to give the best protection at the time to range units. Plate armor was pretty much the most expensive thing you could get back then so you better use that efficiently. Of course exception makes a rule but in general - NO.
