None of my cheap hdd's ever crashed on me, could be luck..

The QX6850 is quite cold, without overclocking it only gets to 28 degrees on full load (air cooling though!), seems like G0 stepping worked out rather well (remember Intel's NetBurst processors? lol.)

Ive seen a Penryn going for ?820 and I bought my QX6850 for ?860, a bit odd.. maybe it was a fake?

The 4GB RAM then, well seeing as they're putting 2GB in normal computers, a good one must have 4GB (right?) someday I'm going to need it (so far the most I've seen in-use was 3GB)

My Crappy computers...

Hi,
I'm not sure about "bragging" but I might as well show you all my crappy hardware too  (sorry, are you allowed to swear here?)

Windows XP Service pack 2
Pentium 4, 3 GHz (yeah, that's bad) :(
1 200GB HD (for data, rubbish, etc.)
1 30GB HD (for windows to run on, almost full now)
Nvidia geforce 6600 (that's quite nice) :D
512MB RAM (That is REALLY bad!)
Quite a good sound card, (can't remember what it's called) MIDI sounds good through it. (well, better than on all other computers I've tried)
CD reader drive (not DVD reader yet or even a CD burner)
1280X1024 CRT 17" monitor (that might not sound the best, but it's a very nice monitor, good colour, etc.)
ADSL 1 internet, 1500 kilo bits/s, or 180 kilo bytes/s (that's the best we can get where I live, but I'm not in a major city, just a tiny village with about 300 people. (not joking)

I am about to upgrade my computer, for obvious reasons. It is about 4 years old.
However, I do have 2 other computers that I use. One is shared with other members of the family and is a bit better than mine, the other runs Linux, I use it for web development and instant messaging. I really hate windows and wish the world worked on Linux.
Hehe, I guess you'll all just laugh at me, I really must get around to upgrading. Still, it runs KaM well enough. (although so did 95, 8 years ago!)
Lewin.

I am surprised you like your gf6600.. I have a 6800LE on my other comp (which is over 2 years old) and don't like it all, I like my 8800GTS 640mb though!
1280x1024 CRT sounds good to me, all i've ever been able to get was 1024x768 but that's really big enough for me (the 2 screens I have both can run 1280x1024 but it looks like crap, 15" is just too small to use 1280x1024 on, and it has to be 60Hz whereas they do 1024x768 @ 85Hz) and I really dislike LCD/TFT screens, their colours and contrast are completely off, and I can see their individual pixels when sitting at a normal distance from them..
Anyway you heard about laser screens? they're supposed to become the new standard for people who have space for them (so not on those flimsy little "computer tables" that are only big enough for a crappy flatscreen with crappy colours and a crappy refresh rate)
Some P4's can run at 5Ghz if properly cooled, tried to OC it any?

Well that's not too bad... :P

These are some of the things I have:

AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Two hard discs, one 40 GB, the other 200 GB (external)
NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4200
VIA AC'97 (sound card)

Shall I bring it to a museum?

lol :D
As long as KaM runs on your pc, no museum is needed

My pc (will soon be updated):
Pentium 4 3,2 GHz
1 GB SD-RAM
2 150 GB HDs
ATI RADEON X740XL
Sound on board :o
21" Flat-screen 8)

Going to change:
CPU -> AMD ATHLON 64 X2 6400+
RAM -> 4 GB DDR2 RAM
Mainboard of course
I'll keep my HDs

a new graphic card.
But i'm not sure.
First i wanted a NVIDIA Geforce 8500GT, but i noticed that it has not a good 3D support. Need to find a better one. Any suggestions?

Ah, and my DVD-Drive is broken :D

True! :P

Mine is as well. If I install a game it may suddenly stop, and if I watch a dvd, it looks like playing KaM with 100 players... Terrible lag.

8800GT, cheap but pretty good, or maybe a 7800 GTX (a bit cheaper - no money wasted on useless DX10 support, but the 8800GT is about 2 times as fast and has twice as much ram - do not get the 512MB version of the 7800GTX its a lot of wasted money)

Anyone else than me waiting for the 9800 series cards? The 8800 cards have been on the market for well over a year now. I think Nividia will soon start releasing information on the new cards.
By the way, was there any truth to the Nvidia 9800 GX2 and it's March release (or was it March for information)?

I'm waiting for them as well, but I also heard they'd release a 9800GTX in February - I doubt that is going to happen... They'll have something in March though otherwise they'd fail their 6-month release cycle (.. it could just be a new one in the 8k series though.. But if they'd put a G9x core and a lot of texture samplers together I'd get it anyway)

AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-52 (1.6GHz, 800-1600MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 Cache)
1x1024 MB DDR2 667MHz RAM
256 MB nVidia GeForce 7600 Go (decent for a laptop)
100GB HDD
DVD-RW(Dual layer, dvd ram supported)
15,4" screen (which is broken, meaning i can't do anything right now!)

It's a pity the RAM isn't 800MHz, it's out of sync with the processor now which probably slows it down to less than 667MHz on average (due to extra waits)

Possibly few % of performance loss, doesn't really matter :)
Still it meets TKE minimum system requirements

ADSL 1 internet, 1500 kilo bits/s, or 180 kilo bytes/s
I wish mine had that speed! the maximum I can get is 46Kbps down 18Kbps up. I live in a town of about 10,000 people

Luckily I have a 2-3MBp/s down and 500KBp/s up at my school.

Even though this thread is quite old, I guess it's better to revive it instead of starting a new one. So I got myself a new rig in early May. Here are the specs for the curious:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Club 3D GF 9800 GTX PCI-E 512MB GDDR-3 (If I only had known the HD4800 series were coming...)
2x2GB Kingston 800MHz DDR2 RAM
ASUS Maxiumus Formula Motherboard
Samsung SpinPoint F1 1 TB, 7200 RPM, SATAII
Antec Performance One P182 Case
Corsair HX520 520W
3?" Floppy Drive (Who wouldn't :D )
LG SuperMulti 52x DVD+-R Drive (Managed to mess up and got an IDE drive, oh well  )
Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 x64

Pity you didn't get a GeForce 280GTX, but then, those 9800GTX's aren't bad at all
But.. a floppy drive..? Do you actually use it?
